Meat Pavilion Closed from 11 June
For safety reasons, Rīgas Nami Ltd. has suspended the operation of the Meat Pavilion at Riga Central Market as of 11 June 2026. The decision was made in light of the building’s technical condition and the forthcoming assessment by the State Construction Control Bureau (BVKB) regarding the pavilion’s safety.
Chairman of the Board of Rīgas Nami Ltd., Ojārs Valkers, commented: “The technical condition of the Meat Pavilion at Riga Central Market has been under continuous supervision by Rīgas Nami Ltd. The assessments in force until now indicated that the pavilion could remain in operation for just under another year, until spring 2027, when it was scheduled to close for renovation. Throughout this period, Rīgas Nami Ltd. has ensured that the building was operated in full compliance with all technical requirements and recommendations issued by the competent authorities. However, having now received information indicating that the Meat Pavilion may have entered a potentially unsafe condition, we have decided to close it immediately.”
He added:
“Although the closure and renovation of the Meat Pavilion had originally been planned for spring 2027, our absolute priority is the safety of everyone at Riga Central Market—both traders and visitors. At the same time, we are working to ensure that the businesses previously operating in the Meat Pavilion can resume serving their loyal customers as quickly as possible from alternative locations within the market.”
Following the pavilion’s closure, Rīgas Nami Ltd. has begun working closely with the affected traders to identify the best possible solutions for continuing their business operations while minimising the impact of the closure. The company is also evaluating options to ensure that meat products remain available at Riga Central Market by temporarily relocating traders to other areas within the market.
The technical condition of the Meat Pavilion and the need for significant investment are not new issues. In cooperation with the State Construction Control Bureau, Rīgas Nami Ltd. has continuously monitored the building’s condition and has long recognised the need to invest in the restoration of Riga Central Market’s historic pavilions, while also developing a long-term vision for their future functionality and sustainable use.
Rīgas Nami Ltd. is currently assessing the next technical and organisational steps, as well as possible scenarios for the future of the building. The public will be informed separately about any decisions taken and the subsequent course of action.
